National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), as part of the NATUR-EXT project, participates through the Applied Ecophysiology Laboratory, which has a solid track record in the study of reproductive physiology, the cultivation of tropical marine species, and the improvement of animal welfare in aquaculture.
The UNAM’s specialized research group works from an integrated perspective that includes both the reproduction and cultivation of species and their relationship with protected natural environments, in collaboration with small local producers. The group’s main areas of expertise include:
- Reproduction and cultivation of the octopus Octopus maya.
- Reproduction and cultivation of emerging tropical marine fish species.
- Reproductive physiology and animal welfare in octopuses, crustaceans, and emerging tropical marine fish.
- Collaboration with small-scale producers interested in the cultivation of octopuses, crustaceans, and marine fish and their connection with a marine protected area.
UNAM in NATUR-EXT: UNAM actively collaborates with the University of the Azores (UAc) and the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC) in the integration of high value-added bioactive compounds into the diet of marine species such as octopuses, crustaceans, and fish. This line of work aims to improve the nutrition, growth, and welfare of these species within sustainable and circular farming systems.
