The Canary Islands Foundation of the Canarian Institute for Cancer Research (FICIC) is a regional foundation operating in the Canary Islands, committed—according to its founding objectives—to R&D in the fields of cancer and bacterial infections, from the discovery of new bioactive compounds to the study of therapies that improve the treatment of these diseases. Over the past 10 years, FICIC has acquired a collection of clinically relevant human cancer cell lines and a variety of clinically relevant bacterial strains. FICIC’s scientists are trained experts in analyzing both extracts and defined small molecules in assays that can definitively determine whether they have promising activities as potential anticancer, antibacterial, or antifungal agents. Furthermore, FICIC can carry out advanced studies to determine the mechanism of action of any active extract or molecule in its assays. In addition to bringing together all the actors in the region working in this field, FICIC also maintains connections and collaborations with key technology and R&D centers in the region. It is based in La Laguna, Tenerife, and is the only entity capable of performing all these different types of analyses within the Canary Islands.

FICIC in NATUR-EXT: FICIC will analyze all extracts and small molecules generated during the project in various biological assays to identify new potential agents with:

  • Antibacterial activity (including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains).
  • Antifungal activity.
  • Anticancer activity (against a panel of human cancer cell lines, including several that are resistant to current treatments).
  • FICIC’s collaboration aims to find active compounds that add value to the extracts and make them suitable for entry into more demanding industries.
