The Technological Institute of the Canary Islands (ITC), through its Biotechnology Department, participated on Friday, September 26, in MacaroNight 2025, held at the Elder Museum of Science and Technology in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This science outreach event, which commemorates the European Researchers’ Night, takes place simultaneously in the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores, with the aim of bringing science closer to society, inspiring scientific vocations, and showcasing the real impact of research on everyday life.
Within this framework, the ITC presented the NATUR-EXT project, an initiative that promotes the sustainable use of natural resources through biotechnology, aimed at generating solutions to current environmental challenges and fostering a more responsible development model.
The project’s participation in MacaroNight 2025 included:

Scientific route at the Elder Museum: An outreach stand where school groups learned firsthand how research with microalgae and other natural resources contributes to new applications in food, agriculture, aquaculture, and high-value bioproducts. The activity was led by ITC researchers Romualdo Bentor and Monserrat Alemán.

“Science on Stage” space: Researcher Begoña Bustamante gave a short talk explaining the goals and progress of NATUR-EXT, highlighting how this project seeks to sustainably valorize local natural resources and foster innovation in the circular bioeconomy.
In this way, NATUR-EXT emphasized the industrial valorization of natural resources for biotechnological purposes as a response to environmental challenges.
